How Parents Can Help Their Kids Succeed in Math Contests

We talk a lot about why students should participate in math contests, and tips for advisors who are working with student teams, but what about parents? As a parent, you play a crucial role in supporting your child’s journey. Here are a few ways you can help your child succeed in their next math contest.

1. Understand the Contest

Familiarize yourself with the format, rules, and objectives of the math contest. Here at COMAP, we provide a list of the rules and tips for participation on our math contest page. We also allow participants to review past problems and solutions on our mathmodels.org website to gain a clear understanding of what is expected. This will allow you to better guide and help your kids succeed in the math contest.

2. Encourage Interdisciplinary Learning

Math modeling often involves applying mathematical concepts to real-world problems, which can span various fields such as science, engineering, economics, and social sciences. Encourage your child to explore these interdisciplinary connections. This broad approach can enhance their problem-solving skills and make their learning experience more enriching and applicable to the contest.

3. Find Inspirational Role Models

Introduce your child to professionals who use math modeling in their careers. This can include engineers, scientists, economists, and researchers. Hearing about real-world applications and career paths can inspire and motivate them. You can find role models through local universities, online talks, webinars, or by connecting with professionals in your community. You can find some inspiring stories in our "In Their Own Words" series, featuring Anne Dougherty and Veronica Ciocanel.

4. Create a Supportive Environment

Designate a quiet, distraction-free study area where your child can focus on their contest preparation. Encourage regular study habits and help them manage their time effectively, balancing schoolwork, contest preparation, and leisure activities. This supportive environment is key to helping your kids succeed in math contests.

5. Emphasize the Importance of Soft Skills

While mathematical skills are crucial, soft skills like teamwork, communication, and time management are equally important in math modeling contests. Encourage your child to develop these skills by participating in group activities, presenting their ideas, and managing their preparation time efficiently. These skills will not only help in contests but also in their overall personal and academic growth. Check out these math contest tips to see how to enhance these skills.

6. Encourage Practice

Regular practice is vital for success in math modeling contests. Encourage your child to solve past contest problems and participate in practice sessions. Provide constructive feedback and help them identify areas for improvement. Practicing resilience and persistence also helps as many challenges require multiple attempts on the way to success.

7. Emotional Support

Participating in contests can be stressful. Be there to offer emotional support, especially during challenging times. Encourage open communication about their experiences, fears, and achievements. Your support can boost their confidence and motivation. Helping them understand the value that comes from “productive struggle” will pay off in many areas.

8. Celebrate Achievements

Recognize and celebrate your child’s achievements, no matter how small. Whether they win a contest or simply complete a difficult problem, your acknowledgment can be a significant morale booster.

9. Network with Other Parents

Connecting with other parents whose children are participating in math modeling contests can be beneficial. You can share experiences, resources, and tips, creating a supportive community for both parents and students.

10. Stay Informed and Involved

Stay informed about upcoming contests, deadlines, and any updates from COMAP and your child’s school. Being involved shows your child that you are invested in their interests and can help them stay organized and prepared.

Supporting your child in their participation in math modeling involves more than just providing resources. It requires encouragement, emotional support, and active involvement in their preparation process. By fostering a positive and supportive environment, you can help your kids succeed in math contests and make the most of this enriching experience.
