A Mathematical Investigation Motivated By a Question About Baseball

Anatural setting for the mathematical exploration that follows is baseball, but this does not imply that we are creating a mathematical model for a question about baseball. The sizes of the numbers that originally led me to become interested in the problem could naturally arise in baseball, but we will not be modeling a situation of interest to a devotee or practitioner of the game. Our beginning is more like a word problem than a modeling problem.
