An Application of the Classical Lot-Size Formula

Author: Geralyn Maresca and Patricia C. Kenschaft

The classic inventory problem asks how many items should be made per batch to minimize the total costs of production. This problem can be presented as soon as beginning calculus students learn the definition of the derivative, and it provides a delightful non-polynomial application to economics to entice students to perceive mathematics as useful.
