Mathematics in The Mud
Author: Rick Luttmann
Although I am a mathematician by profession, I am active in poultry breeding as a hobby. I am occasionally asked if there is any connection between my two interests . Indeed there is. Here are some interesting examples, taken mostly from genetics.
Elementary genetics seems to be well-known to mathematicians , especially those who teach beginning probability and statistics courses. There are two UMAP modules on this subject: Selection in Genetics, by Horelick and Koont, and Genetic Counseling, by Nancy Rosenberg. It may be of interest to see how some of the elementary principles of genetics apply in poultry breeding.
