Table the Discussion
Author: Marsha Davis
The focus of this Pull-Out is on analyzing survey data using two-way tables. In the first activity, students learn to summarize data from two survey questions in a two-way table. They begin their analysis of the data by computing joint and marginal percentages. In Activity 2, students calculate conditional percentages and use their results to explore relationships between the responses to two survey questions. In Activity 3 students conduct their own surveys and then analyze the results.
The activities in this Pull-Out address standard S-ID-5 from the Common Core State Standards for High School Mathematics:
Summarize categorical data for two categories in two-way frequency tables, interpret relative frequencies in the context of the data (including joint, marginal, and conditional relative frequencies). Recognize possible associations and trends in the data.
