The Average of Rates and the Average Rate

In our everyday lives, we often hear phrases involving averages: the student has a grade-point average of 3.12, the baseball player has a batting average of .312, the average monthly rainfall for November is 3.12 inches, etc.

In this HiMAP Pull-Out Section, we will investigate two types averages and look at some of their properties, in addition to discussing an application of these properties in our daily lives.
